Robertson Piper wins Major League Championship!

In the first ever Rec Baseball season held on the new Shunpike fields, the Major Leagues crowned its Champions last night as Robertson Piper defeated Chatham Disposal by a score of 4-2.  It was the culmination of a great season for the team as they held first place from wire-to-wire.

The evening began with a beautiful and heartfelt rendition of the National Anthem sung by Chatham's own Sean McManus and ended with Nick Vivona pitching masterfully and getting the final out on a strike out before being mobbed on the mound by his elated teammates.

 “These boys amazed me all season with their heads-up play and timely hitting,” said their Coach Matt Eig. “Not only did they play great baseball, but they're a great bunch of kids.”

"Big Blue", as they called themselves, went into the playoffs as the #1 seed with a record of 11-3-1. Chatham Disposal, led by Coach Bill Hoban, was the underdog #7 seed that defeated both the #2 and #3 seed to reach the final game. "Chatham Disposal pitched a great game, but our hot bats were silenced by Robertson Piper's excellent pitching" said Hoban afterwards.  

On Friday night, Robertson Piper defeated Team Five Guys to earn a place in the finals in one of the most thrilling games of the season.  Down 7 - 0 going into the final 2 innings, Big Blue scored twice in the 5th and ended the game in walk-off fashion with a 6 run final at bat in a game that had the crowd on edge of their seats.

The spring recreation Major League baseball season got underway in April on our new fields and in the end was a huge success.  "The parents, league officials, sponsors and everyone involved worked really hard to make this season happen and keep the new fields in top-notch shape everyday.  My thanks go to all of them" said Eig.

The playoffs were well attended with great weather conditions. Many of the players from the other teams along with their parents came to watch the final game.
