Rock 'n' Roll and Edible Art at Fishawack

This is Christina Socci blogging live from the 2011 Chatham Fishawack Festival. Here are some updates about what's going on!

"There's nothing like rock 'n' roll to brighten your day!"

Watching the kids performing at the gazebo, I couldn't help but agree. This quote was spoken by one of the audience members as we listened to the kind of fast-paced rock music that generally makes you want to jump on a table and wail on the air guitar.

The group, which started its performance about forty minutes earlier than scheduled, did not pull any punches. Fan favorites such as Led Zeppelin's "Communication Breakdown", Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love", Dire Straits' "Sultans of Swing", and The Strokes' "Last Night" filled the misty air with pounding bass lines and screaming guitar licks.

The School of Rock, which is located at 60 Main Street in Chatham, is remarkable not only for the technical skill with which its students brought these oldies to life, but also for the performers' stage presence and confidence. Maybe it's just because I like the kind of music they played, but I didn't even mind that my flip-flop shod feet were getting cold and my camera lens was in constant need to wiping. When I left around 2:30 pm, the younger kids were still playing their set, so you might still be able to catch the songs played by School of Rock "graduates." I highly recommend it!

After rocking out at the gazebo I found myself irresistibly drawn to the sand art and face painting booths. For those of you who will laugh at me for this (meaning most of my family members), I say that you are never too old for either. There is also a booth for "Sandy Candy: Sand Art You Can Eat!", which appealed to my inner child more than I would like to admit. My dentist will cringe but I will definitely be buying some on my way home.

On the way back to the library (where I am currently writing this post, dear reader), the rock 'n' roll faded away and I found myself, of all places, in Bavaria. At least that's what it sounded like. The brass quintet from my previous post had been replaced during my adventures by "Schnitzelbank." I had to repress the urge to find lederhosen and sing "Edelweiss." I've never particularly cared for German music, but it was pleasant to listen to on a misty day in Chatham.

I am quickly realizing that the unexpected is the common fare of Fishawack, which has made this afternoon one I will remember for a long time. So turn up the amps, pass the sand art, and polka till the sun comes up!
