Where Do We Begin With Gardening?
As we continue laying down the basics of our square-foot garden, you can definitely see we're newbies at gardening!
So our lack of experience and proper preparation will definitely show in a few moments.
After the landscaper cleared out our crazy garden, we started to delve into the making of raised garden beds, creating filler, and finding seeds. My husband constructed the first two of four 4'x7'boxes out of cedar he bought at home depot. These boxes are 12'' tall with galvanized 1/2'' wire mesh on the bottom to keep those pesky burrowing animals away from our veggies. The last two will be 6'' tall with the same wire mesh bottom in addition to a weed cloth.
Unfortunately we had to make some compromises on the Mel's Mix because we were so excited to get started. Instead of a mix including 1/3 peat moss, 1/3 vermiculite, and 1/3 compost, we used a blend of cow manure and Miracle Grow garden soil to replace the compost. We also searched for seeds. I could have planned a lot better ahead of time, but somedays you just want to turn your mind off and walk through a beautiful place and pick up whatever strikes your fancy. So we set off for The Farm at Green Village. You can read about our experience here. I have to say we had an excellent time at The Farm, but were unlucky in finding seeds.
So on to Home Depot, where we were able to score some packets of seeds and two plants to get us started immediately. Here's our list of goodies:
