Ever since the 1922 world premiere in Paris, audiences have been absolutely dazzled—literally blown away—by Maurice Ravel’s orchestration of Modest Mussorgsky’s piano composition Pictures at an Exhibition. Chances are you've heard parts of this famous work—but have you really listened to them?
On Saturday, November 7th, Maestro George Marriner Maull (Artistic Director of The Discovery Orchestra) and special guest pianist Craig Ketter will lead the audience through an interactive—and at times amusing—experience of the magical effect achieved when a piano work is arranged for full symphony orchestra. Several movements will be referenced, but in particular the final movement—"The Great Gate of Kiev"—will be the subject of this hour of musical discovery.
A Listening Guide and other visual enhancements will aid the journey. And in addition, full-sound film footage from a live performance by the Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theater under Maestro Valery Gergiev will also be part of the presentation.
