Chatham Athletic Foundation Donating $100K To Fix Defective Field

The funds will be put towards repairing Lum Field, which was installed by a controversial turf company.

CHATHAM, NJ — The Chatham Athletic Foundation is donating $100,000 to Chatham Borough to fix the faulty turf on Lum Field. The Borough will vote on accepting the money Monday night.

The money will be put towards capital improvements and upgrades to the turf field at Lum, the proposed Borough resolution reads. The turf was installed by the controversial FieldTurf in 2007. The company's website boasts that many of their fields last as long as 13 years; this field has been installed for just over ten years.

An investigation last year found that 164 athletic fields were installed by FieldTurf in New Jersey, many of which have begun to deteriorate and pose safety risks to athletes. FieldTurf is currently being sued by Hudson County for allegedly knowing their fields were defective and selling them anyway.

The Chatham Athletic Foundation provided one third of the $900,000 cost to refurbish Lum Field, their website says. The foundation was founded in 2005 by local parents to help promote proper athletic safety and maintenance of local athletic fields.
