Madison, Chatham Town-Wide Yard Sale Outperforms Previous Years

Registration fees for the yard sale raised $1100 for the Great Swamp Watershed Association.

MADISON, NJ — With spring comes spring cleaning, and on April 30th, more than 100 Chatham and Madison residents took part in the town-wide yard sale.

The yard sale, which ran from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., had 112 registrants, which surpassed the previous year's total of 110. The sale, according to Madison Borough officials, was one of the most successful ever held.

"At the crack of dawn, we had shoppers from New York and Pennsylvania,” Chatham Borough resident Susie Robertson said.

“My sale was so busy I had to telephone my husband inside the house and ask him to bring me coffee,” Madison resident Claire Whitcomb said.

Because each registration included a $10 tax-deductible donation to the Great Swamp Watershed Association (GSWA), registration fees this spring totaled $1100.

“For those keeping score—and we are—the past three Town-Wide Yard Sales have raised over $3000 for our environmental work,” said Valerie Thorpe, Director of Communications and Membership at GSWA. “Of note, some who had already registered ended up having to cancel their sale, and without exception, they insisted we keep the registration fee as a donation to GSWA.”

Margaret Malishchak of Glass4Good was one of the donors this spring, raising $310 for the GSWA by holding a stained glass sale on her front steps.

“This is a great community event that has become a popular and growing tradition for our three towns,” said Robert H. Conley, Mayor of the Borough of Madison. “It’s a win for the environment and a definite win for shoppers.”

The next town-wide yard sale will be held on Oct. 15, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
