Chatham Musician to Perform at Farmer's Market

Borough resident Kathy Byers' new collaboration album teaches environmental responsibility through music.

Chatham Borough resident Kathy Byers, who recently recorded and released a children's album, will perform songs from her new album at the Chatham Borough Farmer's Market opening day on Saturday.

Byers started working in children's music in 2007, and since then has recorded three albums. The latest, entitled "One Earth So Green and Round: Songs of Nature," is a collaboration record with Lydia Adams Davis.

Davis and Byers met through the Children's Music Network, a nonprofit group of education and entertainment professionals with a dedication to children's music. "Our voiced totally matched," Byers said, "and we became friends." The two have five albums and 40 years of musical experience between them.

Together, Byers said she and Davis have a lot of fun working together, and she thinks that attitude comes across in their performances. "We're candid, we're spontaneous," she said. "We just totally enjoy complementing each other through that microphone."

Davis will not be at the Farmer's Market on Saturday, but she and Byers will perform at Mo Fiddles in Livingston at 7 p.m. Saturday. Byers said the concert at Mo Fiddles will be the first official CD release concert.

The songs, Byers said, are original songs written by herself and Davis. They are about educating children to be mindful about their impact on the environment (with songs like "Think About the Ocean" and "Song of Life) while having fun (such as in songs like "Tadpole Shipment" and "Why Do Turtles Cross the Road?")

"The feedback so far has been phenomenal," Byers said. "People tell us they sometimes can't tell our voices apart."

And, she said, "the music is listen-able for adults."
