Chatham Official: Historic Lum Field Oak Tree Needs Aid, But Won't Be Removed

Arbor has been in place for 175 years; tree expert believes it has about three decades left.

A piece of Chatham history recently got a closer look, and for a moment, its future was not looking bright.

But further studies showed a 175-year-old Oak tree just needed some tender, love, and care, and not to be completely removed, as was initially considered.

There’s been a barricade around the tree at Lum Field for some time as the Shade Tree Commission’s “windshield survey” ended with a recommendation for further evaluation of the arbor.

According to Shade Tree Commission member Patrick Carroll, Certified Tree Expert John Linson evaluated the tree and gave his report to the group on July 21.

Linson said the tree is in fairly good condition, especially for its age, and exhibits “good crotching structure.” Linson said the canopy is well distributed and the tree has very little residual storm damage.

Linson’s recommendations will be followed in the coming weeks by the Shade Tree Commission and Department of Public Works. Once the work is complete, the barricade will be removed.

Carroll said Linson’s report showed the tree had another 30 years or so left in it.

The Chatham Borough Shade Tree Commission is made up of seven members and two alternates, all volunteers.
