Chatham Police Investigating Attempted Abduction on N. Summit Avenue

Girl, 9, allegedly approached by man driving white van Thursday afternoon, police report.

Chatham Borough police are investigating a scary incident that occurred late Thursday afternoon, Police Chief Philip Crosson announced.

A young girl riding her bike in Chatham Borough was approached by a man driving a van who asked if she needed a ride, Crosson said.

The girl, 9, was on North Summit Avenue near Weston Avenue, with her mother walking approximately a half block behind her, Crosson said. The male driver in a white van pulled up next to the girl and asked if she needed a ride, Crosson said.

The girl said the van had three circular bumper stickers on the rear. Police were notified approximately 30 minutes after the incident occurred, Crosson said.

The incident is under investigation, and Chatham Borough Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Chatham Borough Police Department at 973-635-8000.
