Chatham’s 4th Of July Fireworks 2020 Canceled

CHATHAM, NJ – July 4 events across the country will not look the same this year thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic and the rules put in place to slow its spread.

On June 14, Gov. Phil Murphy gave the go-ahead for hosted by towns or private groups but those events would need to follow the guidelines outlined by executive order. The limit on outdoor gatherings at 100 is expected to be increased to 250 people on June 22 and 500 people on July 3, but that does not give a lot of time for most to put together their patriotic event, causing a cascade of cancellations and postponements around the state.

Although the majority of fireworks, parades and 5K events have been altered, there are a few alternatives to consider.

In Morristown, their annual reading of the Declaration of Independence will be moved from the Morristown Green to the comfort of your own home. Park rangers Eric Olsen and Tom Winslow will give some history around the Declaration and then read it as has been done in Morristown since 1776. It is scheduled to take place July 4 from 1 to 1:30 p.m. You can find more information on their website.

A handful of places in New Jersey have modified their fireworks to drive-in affairs or postponed them for the fall. For example, in Cedar Grove the annual fireworks display is scheduled for July 2, with a July 3 rain date, and is a drive-in event. The fireworks will be shot off from Panther Park but no one will be allowed on the field.

The Panther Park parking lot, both sides of Bradford Ave. street parking, Municipal Building parking lot and the O’Toole Community Center parking lot will be available for parking. Officials are also asking that those who can see from their homes to simply watch from there. You can see more on their website.

In Florham Park, there will be a car parade through the municipal complex on July 4.

Many communities noted that they were hoping to be able to reschedule for later in the year, but a few committed to dates. Beechwood is planning their fireworks for Sept. 5. Clark is setting them off Sept. 6 at Arthur L. Johnson Regional High School.
