Chatham Township Celebrates First Holi Event
The municipal building baseball field served as host for the Indian Festival of Spring.
CHATHAM, NJ - Before umpires said "play ball" the baseball field at the Chatham Township Municipal Building played host for the first Holi event on Sunday, March 24.
According to organizers, Mayor Tayfun Selen gave permission for the celebration and attended the event. Almost 30 families of Indian heritage attended the event and enjoyed their festivities and organizers noted it was great way to give people of diversity a welcome and help them to feel that Chatham is just like home.
Holi is popularly known as the Indian "festival of spring", the "festival of colors", or the "festival of love" Holi is considered as one of the most revered and celebrated festivals of India, organizers said. The festival signifies the arrival of spring, the end of winter, the blossoming of love, and for many a festive day to meet others, play and laugh, forget and forgive, and repair broken relationships. People play with colors as part of Rangwali Holi, where people smear each other with colors. They also spend time with their friends and families and enjoy Holi delicacies, food and drinks.
