'Passionate' Ex-Chatham Teacher Goes Missing, Sparking Major Search In Massachusetts

The award-winning educator taught English at Chatham High School. She was last seen March 27, according to Massachusetts State Police.

Update: This article now includes statements from Marohn's former colleagues in the School District of the Chathams.

LEE, MA — A car turned up in a heavily wooded hiking area in Massachusetts. The vehicle belonged to Meghan Marohn, a former Chatham teacher, who has been missing since March 27.

Marohn, an English teacher, was an educator at Chatham High School until 2017, according to her family. She taught there for more than 10 years and served as a club advisor, earning teacher of the year from the school several times, they said.

Marohn moved to New York but went missing in Massachusetts. Her black 2017 Subaru Impreza was found, unlocked, at Longcope Park in south Lee. An extensive police search involving helicopters, drones, K9s and ground units ensued. But the efforts of law enforcement, loved ones and volunteers have yielded no results.

The 42-year-old's family set up a website for tips, offering a $50,000 reward for anyone with information leading to Marohn's safe return. Marohn is described as white, with red hair and green eyes. She is 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weighs 120 pounds. (Find more photos of Marohn above and on this webpage.)

Law enforcement seeks anyone who might have a dash camera or surveillance footage facing the street in Lee or Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Anyone who might have footage should save it and call 911 immediately, her family said.

Chatham High School posted a video about Marohn in 2016 as part of its "We are Chatham" series, celebrating those who positively impacted the school community.

"She’s just so passionate about everything that she does, whether it’s teaching, music, everything," said Emilie Hibbard, then a Chatham High School student.

"Everyone’s always smiling," said Peter Weinstein, another fellow student, said of her class. "We’re always having a good time."

Several School District of the Chathams staff members maintained a relationship with Marohn in recent years, said Superintendent Dr. Michael LaSusa.

"Meghan has been in our thoughts and prayers since we learned she was missing," he said.

Shannon Falkner, who teaches English at Chatham High School, maintained a close friendship with Marohn. Falkner called Marohn "a beloved colleague and a dear friend" who made a significant impact on Chatham students.

"Her love of poetry and literature have moved and inspired countless students, at CHS and beyond," Falkner told Patch via email. "But Meghan’s impact on her students extends far beyond the academic curricula she teaches. During her time here in Chatham, her classroom was always open before school, during lunch, and after school as a warm and welcoming space for all students to gather, to write, and to be in community.

"She makes all students feel like they have a place and that they belong. Meghan has a deep commitment to larger social issues like equity and the environment, but she also lives out those beliefs in her day-to-day life, creating supportive and inclusive communities where students feel connected and thrive."
