After 9/11, Shehady enlisted in the military and served in the Global War on Terror in support of Operation Enduring Freedom from 2004 to 2005, rising to the rank of Sergeant before receiving his commission in August 2008.
Next month, Shehady will leave the United States Army with the rank of Captain after 20 years of service. He is fluent in Arabic and French and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Politics and French & Linguistics from New York University.
“Many highly qualified applicants were interviewed, it was a thorough search with excellent
options. Mr. Shehady has our confidence and our support,” Deputy Mayor Mark Hamilton said.
The process to choose Shehady included a search subcommittee to evaluate applications and narrow the field of applicants through interviews. The full Township Committee, as well as Township Department heads, reviewed the finalists in person.
“I worked very hard to make sure this was a truly bipartisan process," Mayor Ashley Felice said. "Ziad is a skilled, energetic and competent leader and this decision was unanimous.”
