Grammy Winner Marc Cohn Opens Sanctuary Series

Sold out house welcomes "Walking in Memphis" singer/songwriter.

The Sanctuary Concert series, presented at the showed their luck when they landed an amazing concert for Friday the 13th.  Marc Cohn, singer, songwriter and Grammy Award winner, filled the church with the soulful sounds from his remarkable career.

Few who listened to the radio in the 1990's can say they have not heard Cohn's biggest hit, "Walking in Memphis." Cohn was accompanied by guitarist, Shane Fontane, who has played with Bruce Springsteen, Sting and will be touring with Crosby, Stills and Nash later this year.

The performance, the first of his new tour, was filled with conversation and laughter. Around playing music from throughout his career, Cohn spoke of his father ("Sliver Thunderbird") and, at 10 years old, singing all the parts of "Jesus Christ Superstar" in the backseat of the car. He spoke about being shot in 2005 by a carjacker in Denver and the profound affect it had on his life. He even included a brief tribute the Bruce Springsteen singing a little of "Thunder Road" to the delight of the sold-out crowd.

Coming up at the Sanctuary: John McEuen, of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, on Sasturday, Feb. 4; Poco, Feb. 11; John Waite, Feb. 18; and Jimmy Webb, a critically acclaimed composer whose works include "Up, Up and Away," "Wichita Lineman" and "By the Time I Get the Phoenix."  Webb will appear in Chatham Saturday, Feb. 25.
