Upcoming Route 80 Lane Closures In Morris County: See Details
Overnight closures on I-80 westbound will shift traffic onto a newly built bridge by Saturday morning.
MORRIS COUNTY, NJ — Motorists on I-80 westbound in Mount Arlington should expect overnight lane closures Friday as the Bridges over Howard Boulevard replacement project moves into its next stage in Morris County.
Beginning at 8 p.m. Friday, until 10 a.m. Saturday, lane closures are scheduled to begin before the bridge over Howard Boulevard and continue to near milepost 32, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
The work will begin with a single lane closure, and a second lane is scheduled to close at about 11 p.m. Construction is expected to start in the right lane and move to the left as work progresses. At least one lane will remain open overnight.

According to NJDOT, the closure is needed to install a construction barrier and restripe the roadway to put a traffic shift in place. If the work is finished sooner, the lanes will reopen earlier.
By 10 a.m. Saturday, three lanes on I-80 westbound are scheduled to be restored and shifted to the right onto the newly built bridge over Howard Boulevard. According to NJDOT, that traffic shift is needed to create a median work zone so the temporary roadway can be removed. The agency reported that this traffic pattern is expected to remain in place until summer 2027, when final paving, restriping, and landscaping work will take place.

The broader project carries a $65.4 million federal price tag and replaced the bridges carrying I-80 eastbound and westbound over Howard Boulevard/CR 516, which were described as being in poor condition.
NJDOT said the improvements included raising the vertical clearance of each bridge, widening the shoulders, lengthening acceleration and deceleration lanes on I-80, and widening the ramps to and from Howard Boulevard. The Howard Boulevard intersection will also be reconfigured to improve operational performance, according to the agency.
The project also includes upgraded traffic signals and lighting, along with ADA-compliant sidewalks and crosswalks. Sidewalks will be extended to the Mount Arlington Train Station to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety and mobility, according to NJDOT.
NJDOT said the precise timing of the work could change because of weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
