Hug A Cop A Huge Hit In Chatham Borough

Chief, lieutenant give out 'hundreds, if not thousands' of hugs.

Chatham Borough’s two highest ranking police officers gave out ”hundreds” and maybe “thousands” of hugs at a special event Saturday.

Chief Philip Crosson and Lt. Brian Gibbons gave out free hugs to anyone who wanted one, NJ.com reported.

The department got the idea from the Newark, Delaware Police Department whose video of officers giving free hugs to anyone who wanted (or needed) one went viral last month.

“It was far better received than I anticipated,” Crosson told the website. “It started out slow at first, I think people were apprehensive, but then it took off.”

People took selfies, members of the military thanked police for their service, and even people from out of state came by for a hug, the website reported.
