Malatesta, Williamson Best at County Championships
The Chatham High senior had the fastest time of all county runners in the 3200-meter run.
senior Anthony Malatesta had the fastest time of all runners for the entire season in the 3200-meter run at the Morris County Winter Track Championship at Drew University Wednesday. Malatesta was named County Champion for the event. His time was 9:47.42.
Overall the boys track team placed 9th in the championship with 11 points. Besides Malatesta, Charlie Zachariades, Matt Proto, Aaron Young and Pierre Pais placed sixth in the 4-x-400 meter relay with a time of 3:41.12. Proto and Young improved their time and ran in 55.1 and 55.3, respectively.
According to head coach Patrick Barry, the team entered the meet Wednesday with a handicap due to several athletes out with illness. "By the end of the meet, however, the Cougars proved that they could overcome adversity and perform at even a higher level than previously achieved," Barry wrote in an email to Chatham Patch.

Sophomore Andrew Vena ran the 600-meter race with a time of 1:31.19, placing 10th overall.
Fred Heller and Joe Kraemer finished 14th and 15th, respectively, in the 1600-meter race with their seasonal best times of 4:48.1 and 4:48.44.

In his first run of the season, Pais finished 22nd in the 300-meter race at 39.8. Patrick Lei broke the 9-second barrier in the 55-meter hurdles (8.98) while Zachariades had a team best 8.73 in the same event. Chris Walczyyk tossed the Shot a total of 33'11.25. "
Other results from Wednesday games:
- The girls basketball team lost to Mt. Saint Dominic 52-38.
- The girls track team finished in 7th place overall at the Morris County Winter Track Championship, with Julie Williamson the champion of the 600-meter race.
- The JV girls basketball team defeated Mt. Saint Dominic 35-34.
- The JV ice hockey team was defeated by Morris Knolls 7-0.
The following games are scheduled for Thursday:
- The bowling team takes on Madison at Rockaway Lanes at 4 p.m.
- The fencing team takes on Mendham at at 6 p.m.
- The wrestling team takes on Madison at Chatham High at 7 p.m.
- The JV wrestling team takes on Madison at Chatham High at 6 p.m.
