The Montessori Children's Academy of Chatham, Morristown and Short Hills

Readies for 2017 Celebration Honoring Dr. Maria Montessori

Students and staff members at the Chatham, Morristown, and Short Hills campuses of The Montessori Children’s Academy (MCA) have once again been busier than ever preparing for Montessori Education Week, which will be celebrated February 27 – March 3 this year. We are excited to be joining Montessori schools worldwide as we pay tribute to Dr. Maria Montessori and the educational method she pioneered over 100 years ago in Italy.

Today, the Montessori Method is celebrated as an innovative, effective, hands-on, cross-curricular, and globally conscious educational philosophy, which serves children from early childhood through elementary years and beyond. With its multi-age groupings and its rich, extensive curriculum, a Montessori education provides children with not only important academic knowledge, but also with the opportunity to develop social and civic responsibilities through a variety of peace activities and service projects incorporated into their daily routines. Montessori students gain a global awareness and from an early age learn to think for themselves and beyond themselves.

During the week of February 27 – March 3, MCA families will participate in many Montessori activities and celebrations. The children at all three of the MCA campuses will commemorate Montessori Education Week by demonstrating Practical Life exercises in the hallway during school drop off and pick up times, singing Montessori songs, studying Italy, reviewing Maria Montessori’s timeline of her life and work, lighting a candle for peace, and creating their own versions of Montessori Materials which will be on display at our local libraries and around local businesses in our communities. Throughout Montessori Education Week, MCA parents are invited to observe in their child’s classroom during the work cycle. In addition, The Montessori Children’s Academy has been in contact with the mayors of Chatham, Morristown, and Short Hills, inviting them to visit our schools to see Montessori education in action. MCA has also requested that the mayors of each town make an official proclamation for Montessori Education Week to broaden Montessori awareness throughout the communities served by our schools.

For our grand finale, MCA will host its annual school-wide celebration at Romanelli’s Pizza and Italian Eatery in Madison, NJ on Saturday March 4th. At the pizza party, the children will be sharing their favorite Montessori lessons. In addition, MCA students will share information about their year-long community outreach efforts benefiting Girls on the Run and will be accepting donations for this special charity. Members from Girls on the Run will attend the event as well, to show their heartfelt gratitude to the MCA Community for their tremendous support this year.
