Nasty Computer Scam Hits Chatham

If you're not careful, you could lose all your files, Chatham Borough Police said.

CHATHAM, NJ — A nasty computer scam has hit Chatham, and the consequences can be severe, Borough police said.

In this scam, someone will call and say they're from Windows and need to help you update your operating system. Once you give them unrestricted access to your computer, they'll encrypt your files and hold them hostage until you pay a hefty fee. (The scam does not appear to target Apple users.)

They'll have have access to any sensitive information kept on your computer, such as account passwords, social security numbers and banking info.

If you're not home, the scammers will leave a phone number and request a call back, police warn. Do not call back.

"If you receive such a call, DO NOT provided the caller with any system information and under NO circumstance should you allow them remote access into your computer system," borough police warn residents.
