NJ Extends Tax Deadline To Wednesday Night

Forgot to file your New Jersey state taxes? You'll have a little extra time this year, thanks to a federal glitch.

NEW JERSEY — Late filers who missed the deadline to file their New Jersey taxes will catch a break this year: the deadline to file state taxes has been extended to Wednesday, April 18 at 11:59 p.m.

The extension comes after the IRS extended the federal deadline to the same time. That extension was a result of major computer glitches that locked taxpayers out of the IRS website on Tuesday. Although New Jersey's system wasn't affected, state officials wanted to alleviate any confusion.

“While New Jersey did not experience any system issues, our goal is to ease any confusion and aid taxpayers who may be dealing with additional burdens caused by delays at the federal level,” said State Treasurer Elizabeth Maher Muoio. “In the event that taxpayers affected by the IRS issue did not take the steps to submit their state returns electronically, we thought it prudent to grant a concurrent extension.”

The "Direct Pay With Bank Account" page on the IRS website — which allows taxpayers to pay their taxes directly — went down on Tuesday, the original filing deadline for federal taxes. There were still ways for residents to file their paperwork, but the online system is one of the few that won't hit taxpayers with fees.
