PCCT Community Garden Fights Food Insecurity

Fourth year in operation, provides fresh produce and herbs to local families

Now in its 4th year of operation, The Presbyterian Church of Chatham Township (PCCT) Community Garden is tended by volunteers who donate the produce to support the efforts of Helping Hands and the Food Distribution at Chatham United Methodist Church each week. “This year, we’re growing a variety of lettuces, Swiss Chard, Kale, Radishes, Beans, Snap Peas, Tomatoes, Eggplant, Rhubarb, Beets, Peppers and several herbs. Last year, we donated over 200 pounds of produce and we expect the same this year”, says Carolyn Smith, member of the Mission and Outreach Committee. The idea of a garden was conceived four years ago. Church members, Lisa and Craig Duke, had a large, unused garden space that they believed could become a productive community garden. They approached the Mission and Outreach Committee of the church with their idea – which was enthusiastically supported as a way for members of the congregation to give to others in need. Members of PCCT are attracted to hands-on mission projects so this was a natural fit. Volunteers built 10 raised beds and hauled over 20 cubic yards of dirt and compost to establish the garden beds. “Our volunteers find this work so rewarding because they can see the results of their collective effort and know they are making a difference in peoples’ lives. Plus, we are learning best ways to plant, fertilize and harvest; experimenting with different vegetables and varieties each year”.
