Relive Chatham's National Night Out (Photos)

CHATHAM, NJ - Luminaries McGruff the Crime Dog and U.S. Representative Mikie Sherrill took in National Night Out in Chatham Township Tuesday night, where first responders got to party with the community they serve.

This year the Chatham Township Police Department and local officials hosted the event at the Colony Pool with free food, music and giveaways. There was also a demonstration from the Morris County K-9 unit and a flyover by a police helicopter.

At the same time, the Green Village Fire Department held a community barbecue beginning at the firehouse located at 529 Green Village Road in Green Village. Hamburgers and hot dogs were provided courtesy of the Fire Department.

National Night Out, a year long community building campaign, is designed to:

• heighten crime prevention awareness
• generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs
• strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships
• send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back
