Skate Park On The Chopping Block In Chatham

The Southern Boulevard facility will most likely be replaced by affordable housing.

CHATHAM, NJ - Residents and visitors that travel to Chatham Township to shred at the Skate Park on Southern Boulevard may have to look for a new home as township's affordable housing obligation is likely to overtake the site.

A pair of ordinances introduced by 4-0 votes by the Chatham Township Committee Nov. 8 approve a redevelopment plan that would remove the skate park for the construction of 24 housing units.

The second ordinance introduced tied into the zoning of the Dixiedale Farm and the construction of 50 townhomes and the affordable housing units at the Skate Park site. That discussion begins at the 35 minute mark of the video.

Both ordinances are scheduled to be be reviewed by the planning board before the township committee votes to adopt the measures at its Dec. 13 meeting.

There are no plans to establish a new skate park in Chatham. According to Township Administrator Thomas Ciccarone there was no site available to move the park to. As for the timing of the park's removal, officials estimated that the park should remain open for at least a year.
