Soccer Teams Move On in Soccer Tournaments

Everything you need to know about Chatham High sports.

Sports teams from Chatham High School move into tournament and post-season play.

On Thursday:

  • The volleyball team defeated Red Bank Regional High School 2-1 (26-24 Cranford, 29-27 Chatham, 26-24 Chatham.)

  • The girls soccer team defeated the no. 2 seeded Mendham in the sectional quarterfinals. After playing 100 minutes the game ended at 1-1 in Mendham. The Lady Cougars advanced to the next round on penalty kicks in the 7th round. Chatham missed the first penalty kick and scored on all of the rest. Mendham missed their 4th penalty kick and then their 7th was saved to end the game. "My girls were excellent," said Head Coach Chris Calveley. Chatham won 6-5 on penalty kicks, with Maggie Higgins (2), Liz Hyde, Emily Hoffman, Kelsey Burke, and Lauren Maiorano scoring. Morgan Maltby saved 2 PKs and saved the Mendham penalty that ensured Chatham's victory.
  • The volleyball team defeated Sterling High School 2-0 (25-23, 25-8). This concludes the volleyball season.

On Saturday:

  • The boys soccer team defeated Nutley 3-1 in Chatham.
  • The field hockey team was defeated by West Essex in North Caldwell. This concludes the field hockey season.

  • The boys cross country team earned second place in the North Jersey Section 2, Group II sectional meet. The Boys' Cross Country team placed 2nd Place in the North II Group II State Sectional Championships at Warinanco Park on Saturday. Anthony Malatesta placed second with a time of 16:43. Brian Leonard also finished in the top 10 for a medal (10th) with a time of 17:43. Dominic Vernazza finished 11th at 17:52. Fred Heller finished in 18:02, Corey Black in 18:07, Andrew Vena in 18:10 and Parth Shah in 18:35.
  • The girls cross country team earned fifth place in the North Jersey Section 2, Group II sectional meet. Their place advanced them to the State Group II Championships at Holmdel Park next Saturday.  The girls finishers on the 5250m course were:
    Tara Hanley-2nd place in 18:46
    Tess Frenzel-27th in 21:45
    Tara Malanga-29th in 21:55
    Shannon Hynes-36th in 22:21
    Julie Williamson-38th in 22:34
    Julia Harrigan-40th in 22:39
    Laura Walsh-44th in 22:50

Those wishing to join boys and girls indoor track teams meet with Coaches Barry and Ullmeyer on Wednesday in the cafeteria at 3 p.m.

Any students wishing to join the wrestling team can meet with Coach Cassera on Thursday at 2:40 p.m. in the cafeteria.

The NJSIAA has posted the grouping for the general classification sports. Chatham again will be in North Section 2, Group III.

The next Athletic Booster Club Meeting is on Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. at the Chatham High media center.

Chatham High sports teams are assigned to the following state tournament groups:
North 2 Group III - Soccer, Tennis, Basketball, Baseball, and Softball
North 2 Group II - Cross Country, Football, Field Hockey, Bowling, Wrestling, Golf
South Group II - Volleyball

The ice hockey, swim and bowling team seasons begin on Nov. 15. The basketball, wrestling, indoor track and fencing teams begin on Nov. 28.
