Stolen Vehicles In Chatham Borough, Police Crime Stats Released
To date, June has had the most known vehicle theft attempts, but only one vehicle has been stolen, police said.
CHATHAM BOROUGH, NJ — As communities throughout Morris County have seen an increase in vehicle thefts in recent months, Chatham Borough police have been working to reduce the odds in the borough.
According to a report released by members of the Chatham Borough Police Department, Chatham accounted for approximately 24 percent of all stolen cars in Morris County in both January and February, but that figure has since dropped to 8.14 percent.
"Thank you to all for heeding the warnings and locking doors, removing keys/valuable, and closing garage doors (regardless of the time of day). Your efforts are working & we appreciate the partnership and support," police said.

Car thefts have remained a problem in New Jersey, which is currently experiencing a "serious" increase in motor vehicle thefts, according to Acting Attorney General Matthew Platkin. Two car thefts were reported in the neighboring town of Summit last week, and in both cases, cars were stolen from Summit residences and left unlocked with the key fobs inside.
The Morristown Department of Public Safety offered the following tips earlier this year to avoid becoming the victim of theft:
- Never leave your car running or the keys in the ignition when you are away from it, even for "just a minute."
- Keep valuables out of sight or in the trunk. Purses, money, credit cards and cell phones in plain view only help attract thieves.
- Always close the windows and lock your car, even if it is in your driveway, garage or in front of your home or a business. Never leave key fobs in the vehicle.
- Always be alert, and report suspicious activity immediately by dialing 911.
- If your vehicle has an alarm or other anti-theft device, use it.
