These 72 Sex Offenders Can't Be Found By N.J. Police

Moderate and high risk offenders have not complied with New Jersey authorities and have warrants out for their arrest.

Some of the highest risk sex offenders in the state of New Jersey can’t be located by police because they haven’t reregistered with authorities despite being legally required to do so.

The New Jersey State Police lists 72 noncompliant tier 2 and tier 3 sex offenders – those of moderate or high risk to reoffend – who are not accounted for in the most previously listed address.

Sex offenders are required to register, or verify their address, once every 90 days or once a year, depending on their offense level. In addition, sex offenders must notify local police 10 days before they move.

According to New Jersey State Police, failure to register under Megan’s Law is a fourth degree crime and warrants are issued for their arrest if they do not comply with court orders.

The state police data has 4,309 registered sex offenders listed currently, but does not account for tier 1 offenders. The noncompliant sex offenders are all male except for one woman, and five New Jersey towns have no noncompliant offenders: Warren, Sussex, Burlington, Monmouth, and Hunterdon.

Passaic and Union counties were tied at 13 for most noncompliant offenders with previous addresses in those jurisdictions.
