Wear Your Helmet, Get Free Ice Cream From Chatham Police
This summer, the Chatham Police Department has resumed awarding certificates to children who follow proper bike safety rules.
CHATHAM, NJ — Usually, if the police issue you a ticket, it is for something you did wrong. That is not the case for Chatham Township children out on their bikes. This summer, police are ticketing them for doing the right thing.
Children who are seen practicing proper bike safety, including the use of a helmet, will be rewarded with a certificate for a free small soft serve ice cream with a topping from Scoops Ice Cream Shop.
According to police, the bike safety program was started with the goal of teaching children at a young age the importance of proper bike safety, such as wearing a helmet or any other safety equipment while crossing roadways.

"Children can also safety stop one of our officers to receive a coupon. We feel this a good way to promote bike safety in the summer months for our children, as well as have our officers interact with the youth of our Township in a positive way," Detective Michael Bloom said.
The initiative, which will run throughout the summer, has been implemented in municipalities throughout the Garden State.
