CHATHAM, NJ — Our summer series of outdoor concerts continues with Gerard and Diane Barros performing songs of Carole King on Wednesday. The concert will take place in the event of rain (Lundt Room) or shine (on the library lawn). Summer reading programs for children, teens and adults are going strong. There is still time for children to earn prizes and invitations to our fabulous Summer Reading Picnic; for teens to win a grand prize – iPad Mini; and for adults to win their own prizes – gift cards to local restaurants. MONDAY, JULY 23
Ⓣ Rock Painting for Teens – 3:30 p.m.
Grades 6 to 12, registration required.
Paint a rock with an inspirational message or to look like your favorite animal. We will provide all the materials, just bring your creativity!

Ⓒ Chess for Kids
Group 1 – 4 pm. Players with little or no experience with chess. Suggested ages 6 to 8.
Group 2 – 5 pm. Players who can finish a game with checkmate. Suggested ages 8 to 10.
Registration required.
This summer’s classes, led by Chess Expert Sean Finn, take place twice a week. The last class on July 25 will be a tournament for both groups, starting at 3 pm.

For preschoolers and their caregivers. No registration required.
10 – 10:30 am. Ages 2 & younger
10:30 – 11 am. Ages 3 & up.

Ⓣ College Essay Workshop for Teens with Alisha Davlin – 3 to 5 pm
For students entering Grade 12 or 11. Registration required.
This is the last class in the series. Objective: Brainstorm, draft, and complete the Common Application Personal Statement. As a former admissions essay reader, Ms. Davlin knows what makes for a competitive college essay. You want the reader to connect with your voice, to know you, and most importantly – to remember you. This course offers you the chance to improve your essay writing so you can stand out from the crowd.

Tuesdays, July 10, 17 & 24 – 4 to 5 pm
Ages 5 & Up Limit: 8 children

Make a fun, no-sew Shopkins-style Princess Cupcake in this 3-week class!

Ⓒ Art Kids Academy: Musical Compositions – 4 p.m.
Ages 7 to 12 Limit: 25 children

Learn about instruments, musical words and the basics of music in this art project inspired by all things melodic.

Ⓒ The Actor’s Craft – 7 p.m.
Tuesdays, July 17, 24 & 31; August 7 & 14 – 7 to 8:30 pm
Learn the craft of acting from Bill Sorvino of the celebrated Sorvino acting family. Students will learn the basics of the Meisner method. They will gain basic skills, knowledge and experience in the craft of acting for stage and screen. Once the skills are formed, there will be scene work culminating in a showcase performance for the students who have attended all classes.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 25

For preschoolers and their caregivers. No registration required.

Ⓐ Book Group: Uncommon Type: Some Stories – 1 p.m.
The library book group will discuss Uncommon Type: Some Stories by Tom Hanks. Everyone is welcome to attend. You may pick up a copy at the Information Desk.

Ⓒ Chess for Kids – Tournament 3 to 6 p.m.
The tournament is the culmination of this summer’s classes. Students from both groups will play in the Lundt Meeting Room.

Ⓒ Stitch a Beast Boy Character with Miss Polly – 4 p.m.

Sew a cool Beast Boy from the new Teen Titans movie in this 3-week class!

Ⓐ One Fine Tapestry: A Carole King Tribute – 7 p.m.
Gerard and Diane Barros will salute the legendary singer/songwriter Carole King and perform her great solo hits as well as classics she wrote for other artists including the Drifters, the Shirelles, the Chiffons, the Beatltes, and James Taylor. The concert will be held on the library’s lawn (you may bring a chair or a blanket). In case of inclement weather, the concert will be held in the Lundt Meeting Room.

THURSDAY, JULY 26
Ⓒ Music with Carolyn Dempsey – 10 or 10:45 am

Move, shake, dance and sing to Carolyn’s guitar music!

Ⓒ Art Kids Academy: Kandinsky Rhythm – 4 pm
Ages 7 to 12 Limit: 25 children

Create an abstract painting inspired by classical music while learning about Wassily Kandinsky.
