CHATHAM, NJ - A pair of popular movies, a lecture series on Russia and children friendly music and crafts highlight this week at the Library of the Chathams.
SPOTLIGHT ON: RUSSIA
With Russia being in the news lately, we felt that it is an important topic to read and talk about at the library. We will have a two-part lecture series about history, culture and politics of Russia, starting on Friday, Oct. 12 (see listings below for details). Storytime
Storytime is an 8-week, progressive program for preschoolers and their caregivers.
Registration required

Library Cinema for Kids: The Book of Life – 2 p.m.
Columbus Day movie for children of all ages
Manolo, a young man who is torn between fulfilling the expectations of his family and following his heart, embarks on an adventure that spans three fantastic worlds where he must face his greatest fears. Bring a mat or a pillow to get comfortable. We’ll provide the movie and the popcorn.

Music with Carolyn Dempsey – 10 or 10:45 a.m.
For preschoolers and their caregivers
Move, shake, dance and sing to Carolyn’s guitar music.
ESL Lunch Hour – 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
For ESL students. To get even more practice in English conversation, and to get to know your fellow students, bring your own lunch and enjoy it in the company of other students and tutors.
English as a Second Language (ESL) – 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.
Thursdays, Sept. 13 through Nov. 1

This 8-week series of classes is for everyone who wants to improve their English language skills. Students are divided into small groups by skill level. Books and other learning materials will be provided. The program is free – all you need is a commitment to learn.
Cinema214: Hotel Transylvania 3 (PG, 97 min.) – 7 p.m.
Join your favorite monster family as they embark on a vacation on a luxury monster cruise ship so Drac can take a summer vacation from providing everyone else’s vacation at the hotel. It’s smooth sailing for Drac’s Pack as the monsters indulge in all of the shipboard fun the cruise has to offer, from monster volleyball to exotic excursions, and catching up on their moon tans. But the dream vacation turns into a nightmare when Mavis realizes Drac has fallen for the mysterious captain of the ship, Ericka, who hides a dangerous secret that could destroy all of monsterkind. CALL: The History and Politics of Russia
Fridays, Oct. 12 & 19 – 1 p.m.
Dr. Roy Licklider, Professor of Political Science at Rutgers University with a Ph.D. in International Relations from Yale, will present a two-part lecture series on the history, culture and politics of Russia. The first lecture will discuss the history and culture of Russia; the second will discuss current events and issues involving Russia and the US, and Russia’s relationship with other countries. This is a free CALL series. Pre-registration is requested.
Anime Club – 3 p.m.
Grades 6 to 12
Come read, watch, and discuss anything and everything about anime and manga with other fans. All are welcome, even if you’re brand new to the world of anime.

Drop-In Storytime – 11 am
For children of all ages. No registration required.
Become an Empowered Health Care Consumer – 2 p.m.
Lorie Gardner, RN, BSN, and member of the National Association of Health Care Advocacy, will share information important for all health care consumers. Her focus is to ensure that patients are equipped to make good medical decisions and obtain optimal healthcare in times of illness or aging. Pre-registration is requested.
Chess Club for Adults – 2 to 4:30 p.m.
Are you a chess player looking for partners and a comfortable place to play close to home? This club is for you! Enjoy a game of chess on a Saturday afternoon twice a month. We provide chess boards and pieces, and even a chess clock! No registration required.
