Baby Penguins Join Adventure Aquarium Family (PICS)

1 little blue penguin is named Tater Tot. You can cast your vote to decide the newest baby's name.

CAMDEN, NJ — Adventure Aquarium recently welcomed two baby penguins, and staff dropped a name reveal Wednesday for one of them: Tater Tot. But the aquarium could use help in naming the most recent addition to the little-blue-penguin family.

On Feb. 15, little blue penguins Sheila and Spud welcomed a healthy baby male. It took some time to come up with a name for the baby before landing on Tater Tot. Fellow penguins Maremma and Bloke welcomed their own healthy male hatchling 10 days later.

Tater Tot and the new baby are cousins — Sheila and Bloke are siblings.

"It will be about a month and a half before both chicks are ready to rejoin the colony on exhibit, but the cuteness is well worth the wait," the aquarium said in a news release.

Little blues are the smallest species of penguin, growing to an average of 13 inches in height and 3 pounds, the aquarium says. Their range includes the southern coast of Australia to the South Solitary Island offshore New South Wales, along with coastal areas of New Zealand.

The species is known for its striking state-blue plumage and small stature, which has given them the nickname of "fairy penguins."
