Corrections Officer Dies On Way To Work In South Jersey, Laid To Rest Thursday

LINDENWOLD, NJ — A viewing and funeral services are being held for a 36-year-old corrections officer on Thursday who died suddenly on the way to work.

Isiah Hampton Watkins, of Gloucester Township, died on March 10 after suffering a medical emergency while traveling to Camden County Correctional Facility to begin his workday, according to officials with the County.

Watkins was known for his professionalism and commitment to the safety of the residents and his colleagues.

"Our corrections officers do the hard work that often goes unseen, and Officer Watkins was a young man in the prime of his life and career," Commissioner Jonathan Young said. "This is a truly devastating loss."

The Celebration of Life for Watkins begins at 9 a.m. and runs until noon at Bethany Baptist Church at 1115 E Gibbsboro Rd.

A funeral service will begin immediately after.

Department flags at the Federal Street facility will be at half-staff in his honor until the funeral ends.
