Lourdes Appoints Surgeon to Bariatric Surgery Program

Dr. Kakkilaya has performed more than 1,000 bariatric surgeries

Surgeon Harish Kakkilaya, MD, MS, FRCS, FACS, FASMBS, was recently appointed to the Bariatric Surgery program at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center. Dr. Kakkilaya specializes in laparoscopic and bariatric surgery. He has performed more than 1,000 bariatric surgeries.

Dr. Kakkilaya comes to Lourdes from The Memorial Hospital of Salem County, where served as Chairman of Surgery and Medical Director of Salem Surgical Weight Loss Center.

Board-certified in surgery, Dr. Kakkilaya completed his fellowship in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery at Northwest Hospital and Sinai Hospital in Baltimore. He completed his residency in general surgery at Mercy Catholic Medical Center and Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center. Dr, Kakkilaya earned his medical degree from the University of Bombay and his bachelor’s degree from Mysore Medical College in India.

Dr. Kakkilaya has presented his work at national and international conferences. His research has been published in medical journals such as the Annals of The Royal College of Surgeons of England, and Clinical Governance: An International Journal.

Dr. Kakkilaya has won numerous awards and recognitions, including the Outstanding Laparoscopic Surgeon Award from the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, and the Academic Excellence Award from Mercy Catholic Medical Center. Dr. Kakkilaya has been nominated as a Top Doctor for Bariatric Surgery by South Jersey magazine each year since 2012.

Dr. Kakkilaya is a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, the American College of Surgeons, and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

Lourdes’ Bariatric Surgery program, accredited as a Comprehensive Center by the American College of Surgeons Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP), and recently accredited by the Clinical Sciences Institute of Optum as a Bariatric Center of Excellence, is noted for its clinical quality, as well as its multidisciplinary team and patient-centered care.
