Mom and Baby Reunite with Lourdes Staff who Helped Save Them
Both are happy and healthy; mom thanks the multidisciplinary team at Lourdes
Last year, 34-year-old Camden resident Arislenny Nunez-Cuevas experienced a difficult pregnancy with multiple medical issues, and at 31 weeks gestation, she presented to Lourdes’ Labor and Delivery department. Nunez-Cuevas had a kidney infection and it quickly became a medical emergency.
“Before our eyes, Arislenny rapidly deteriorated into septic shock,” said Dr. Daniel Berger, Chairman of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center. “In Intensive Care Unit (ICU), a multidisciplinary team of ICU intensivists, OB/GYN and Urology clinicians felt she needed urgent treatment. Before this could even occur, she went into respiratory failure and required intubation to breathe. At the same time, the baby had a fatally slow heartbeat and required an emergency cesarean section in the ICU bed.”
The baby was delivered that day, May 24, 2016 (normal term is 40 weeks). While the baby came early, Arislenny and her daughter are both happy and healthy now thanks to the multidisciplinary team at Lourdes.

“This is a highly unusual situation and required collaborative teamwork,” added Dr. Berger. “The outcome is an absolute win with a healthy mom and healthy baby.”
The baby was discharged after being in Lourdes’ Intensive Care Nursery for 22 days. Nunez-Cuevas, who is also mom to a 9-year-old daughter, could not be happier.

Nunez-Cuevas recently reunited with Lourdes staff during a follow-up appointment at the medical center.
“I loved the care I received at Lourdes,” said Nunez-Cuevas. “The medical team was excellent and the Intensive Care Nursery team who cared for my baby were wonderful also. Everyone was so caring and attentive. I’m forever grateful to the Lourdes team.”
