2 Men, Pregnant Teen Killed In Stolen SUV Crash In South Jersey

A school was evacuated because of the crash.

Three people died Monday in a crash involving an SUV that was evading police in South Jersey, State Police said. Two men and a pregnant teenager were killed. Their names had not been released as of Tuesday afternoon.

The crash happened at about noon at Flyatt and Caranza roads in Shamong Township in Burlington County. Troopers were dispatched to the Pic-a-Lilli Inn on Route 206 in Shamong for the report of a stolen vehicle, which was described as a 1999 green GMC Yukon.

As troopers traveled southbound on Route 206 in response to the scene, they observed the stolen Yukon traveling northbound on Route 206. The responding troopers turned around in an attempt to stop the vehicle.

As the troopers began traveling northbound on Route 206, they observed the Yukon driving erratically at a high rate of speed.

Troopers followed the vehicle for a short distance before the driver lost control of the SUV and ran off the side of the road. The vehicle then struck a utility pole and became engulfed in flames, police said. The three occupants of the Yukon were pronounced dead at the scene.

The circumstances surrounding the stolen vehicle and the crash remain under investigation.

The accident happened right in front of the Sequoia Alternative Program school, which was dismissed early due to the accident. The students and staff were taken to a transportation yard about 5 miles away, where parents picked their children up.
