2016 FBI Crime Report: Slight Rise In Violent Crime In Cinnaminson

Violent crime was on the rise nationally last year, according to a recent FBI report.

CINNAMINSON, NJ — There was a slight rise in violent crime in Cinnaminson in 2016, according to a recent report by the FBI.

The information comes from the FBI’s annual report Crime in the United States. The publication is a statistical compilation of offense, arrest, and police employee data reported by law enforcement agencies voluntarily participating in the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program, according to the FBI.

There were 25 incidents of violent crime in Cinnaminson — robberies, aggravated assault, rape, murder and manslaughter — reported in 2016, the most recent year for which data is available. It is up from 14 incidents reported last year, and closer to the 31 reported in 2014.

In three categories, the number was up following a drop from 2014 to 2015. For example, there were 15 aggravated assaults reported in 2016, up from 7 in 2015. There were 16 in 2014, just one more than the number reported last year.

There were 3 rapes in 2016, up from 2 in 2015, but down from 6 in 2014. There were 7 robberies in 2016, compared to 5 in 2015 and 9 in 2014. No murders were reported.

Motor vehicle thefts dropped from 11 in 2015 to 9 in 2016, following an increase from 4 to 11 from 2014 to 2015. Both burglary and larceny have been decreasing over the last three years. Burglaries hit 63 in 2014, before dropping to 40 the following year. In 2016, 38 burglaries were reported. Larceny dropped from 341 incidents in 2014 to 282 in 2015 and 258 in 2016. There were no incidents of arson.

Nationally, the FBI said the 2016 statistics showed an increase in the estimated number of violent crimes, with a 4.1 percent rise when compared with 2015 data. Nationally, property crimes dropped 1.3 percent.

The 2016 statistics show the estimated rate of violent crime was 386.3 offenses per 100,000 inhabitants nationally, and the estimated rate of property crime was 2,450.7 offenses per 100,000 inhabitants. The violent crime rate rose 3.4 percent compared with the 2015 rate, and the property crime rate declined 2.0 percent.

The UCR Program report for 2016 included information from 16,782 agencies across the country, out of 18,481 city, county, university and college, state, tribal, and federal agencies eligible to participate, the FBI said.
