All Girl Coding Event At Rowan College At Burlington County

The event is set for Saturday morning, March 17, and will feature local female leaders.

Rowan College at Burlington County will host Google’s “Made with Code” party on Saturday, March 17, 8:30 a.m.-noon at Laurel Hall Room 320 on the Mount Laurel Campus. The event is for any girl, ages 10-16, who is curious about finding a future in the world of coding. No prior coding experience is needed to attend.
Participants will learn about how coding is used through various career landscapes, from art to sports, fashion, medicine, science and everything in between.

The “Made with Code” party is sponsored by the college along with New Jersey State Senator Dawn Marie Addiego and Burlington County Freeholders Kate Gibbs and Linda Hughes. The three local leaders will be on hand for the event.

“Coding and computer technology are job industries growing as fast as any industry in the country, but these well-paying jobs are too often dominated by men. It’s time for girls to get in the game and become the future of coding,” Addiego said.

The event also features a screening of “Hidden Figures,” the Oscar nominated movie based on the true story of three female, African-American NASA mathematicians – Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughn and Mary Jackson – and their contributions to the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit. Following the movie, attendees will participate in a discussion on the movie, be treated to refreshments and then break off into groups for coding projects.

“Knowledge of coding can open up an endless amount of doors. We’re excited to provide girls a head start, so they can go on to knock those doors down,” Gibbs said.
