Man Accused Of Setting Deadly Burlington County Fire

The man who was arrested was also hurt in the blaze, police said.

PEMBERTON, NJ — A Burlington man is charged in connection with a fatal fire in April at a Pemberton apartment complex, according to New Jersey State Police.

Newlin Evans, 22, faces charges of felony murder, aggravated arson and causing or risking widespread injury or damage for allegedly setting the fire in an Egbert Street apartment building, state police said on Friday.

Camryn Powell, 22, died in the April 20 fire and two others were hurt, state police also said.

Evans used an accelerant to start the fire and then fled the scene, according to state police. He was later found at a motel in Mansfield and sent to Jefferson Hospital to be treated for injuries sustained in the fire, according to state police.

Evans was arrested at that hospital and sent to a prison in Philadelphia while he awaited extradition to New Jersey, state police said.
