Chickweed, Horseflies and Princabella

The alpacas living on Stormwind Farm enjoy grazing on beneficial herbs. Princabella's birth makes a friend happy.

During the hot summer months, fans run in both barns to keep the alpacas cool. During a short period in May, I run fans to protect the animals from horseflies. These huge insects cause the alpacas severe discomfort with their nasty stings. Mercifully, the horsefly season does not last long on our property, usually about two weeks.

A rather beneficial result of May rains and temperature is the abundant growth of chickweed in damp places. This herb is full of vitamins and cleanses the blood.

I grow lemon balm in two flower beds, and it has spread like a wildfire over the years. Lemon balm has antibacterial as well as antiviral properties. Its dried leaves can be used to prepare a calming tea.

The alpacas enjoy both herbs, freshly cut and offered daily during the growing season. They also consume the many dandelions growing in our pastures with great gusto. Dandelions contain high levels of potassium, iron, carotene, and vitamins.

A good friend called the other day. She's experienced all kinds of problems on her farm over the last few months. Finally, a break! This past week, my friend has been jubilant. A very beautiful, healthy female cria was born—a textbook birth! Her name is Princabella.

My friend and I agreed that farming and raising livestock can be a real roller coaster of ups and downs.

I may be reached over the web contact on www.stormwindalpacas.com and at the market in Moorestown on May 19.
