IRS EXTENDING HOURS OF OPERATION AT SELECT LOCATIONS

NEWARK, DE - The IRS is extending hours of operation at select locations in New Jersey and the City of Philadelphia to lend a hand to help last minute filers. Normally there are about 10 percent of the taxpaying public that requests a Form 4868 which is an application to obtain an automatic six month extension to file your tax returns. This only allows you to extend the deadline to FILE your paper or electronic return but you still MUST PAY your tax liability by April 15, 2013.

To get a good estimate is pull out last year’s return and compare it to the tax information: 1040s, 1099s, etc to see if your income had changed much. If not you are in pretty good shape if the amount withheld this year is pretty close to last year’s amount. Where you could run into trouble is if you had a large capital gain, credit card debt forgiven or your mortgage was written off or, large end of year bonus. You will have to include a portion of that unexpected gain in your payment.
