Facilitated Self Assistance (FSA) is a concept that’s part of IRS’s Volunteer Income Taxpayer Assistance (VITA) return preparation program designed to provide increased taxpayer access to free tax preparation services. FSA combines the computer skills of the taxpayer, the intuitive programming of the tax software, and the expertise of the VITA certified volunteer to produce an accurate, taxpayer-prepared return.

Through FREE volunteer return preparation programs, IRS partners help more than 3 million people file their taxes each year.

The program allows taxpayers the opportunity to prepare their own taxes and ask questions of a certified tax coach during the process of filing their return. If the taxpayer qualifies for a company’s FSA offer, they will receive free federal and state filing services. This service is available for free to individuals or families with a combined income under $57,000 in 2012.
