Burlington County Receives $24K Security Grant From DHS

Burlington County will receive a $24,585 port security grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Senators Bob Menendez and Cory Booker announced.

It was part of $57,621,214 in DHS grant funding recently announced for the state to help boost state and local government port security, terrorism prevention, emergency preparedness and transit security efforts.

“Because of our state’s proximity to New York and Philadelphia, as well as our major ports, airports and infrastructure, New Jersey will always remain a prime target for threats,” Menendez said. “Year after year, I fight for federal funds to provide law enforcement agencies, first responders, and nonprofit organizations with the resources they need to boost their security efforts to keep communities throughout our state safe.”

“New Jersey is home to some of our nation’s most critical infrastructure and plays a significant role in keeping our workforce and economy moving,” Booker said. “Unfortunately, we also know that these vital assets can be vulnerable to threats, so we need to ensure all levels of government are working together to protect them. This federal funding will provide our law enforcement agencies, emergency responders, and nonprofits the resources they need to keep themselves, our families, and our communities safe.”

Four statewide grants were awarded, including:

• An $8 million grant from the State Homeland Security program for implementation of state homeland security strategies to prevent, protect against, mitigate, respond to and recover from acts of terrorism;
• An $8,281,372 grant from the Emergency Management Performance Grants program to prepare for all hazards and provide a system of emergency preparedness;
• A $20,050,000 grant from the Urban Area Security Initiative program to support the planning, organizing, equipment and training needs of high-threat, high-density urban areas against acts of terrorism; and
• $7,218,211 in Nonprofit Security Grants, including $150,000 for organizations outside of urban areas, to help religious and other community organizations protect themselves from security threats.
