A newborn baby was found burning on a road after a woman allegedly doused the child in a flammable liquid. A woman has been arrested.

A newborn baby who was set on fire on a southern New Jersey road has died, authorities said.

The newborn baby, whose name, exact age and gender have not been identified, was found burning in the middle of a road in southern New Jersey Friday night, according to reports.

The baby, who was in critical condition, was found by police on Simontown Road in Pemberton Township in Burlington County.

A woman was hysterically crying nearby, 6ABC said.

It is unclear if the woman is the child’s mother or what happened in the moments leading up to the police arriving.

A woman was seen dousing the baby in a flammable liquid in the middle of the road; police extinguished the flames, but the baby was still breathing and had significant burns, according to The Intelligencer.

The woman was taken to Deborah Hospital in Pemberton for examination, and then arrested; police did not say whether she was the mother, according to The Intelligencer.

Police responded to the scene for a report of a commotion outside a residence, 6ABC said.

The baby was flown to Temple University Hospital, according to the report.

The baby was rushed to St. Christopher’s Hospital For Children in Philadelphia, according to Channel 3 in Philadelphia.
