Crossing Guard Fatally Struck While Saving NJ Students From Oncoming Car: Police
Police identified the school crossing guard 'heroically took action' to keep 2 students safe before succumbing to his injuries.
BURLINGTON, NJ — A Burlington City School crossing guard succumbed to his injuries Friday after protecting two students from an oncoming vehicle, officials said.
Bruce Morlack, 74, was struck by a car Friday morning as he escorted two students across the street. Morlack "heroically took action" to get the children out of harm's way, police said.
Morlack was hospitalized in critical condition before succumbing to his injuries, police said Friday evening.

The students were unhurt.
The City of Burlington has come together to mourn the loss of Morlack. There was a moment of silence during the city's holiday parade on Saturday as community members paid tribute to his bravery and selflessness, officials said.

The crash happened at 7:20 a.m. Friday at Jacksonville Road and James Street — an intersection near Burlington City High School. The driver stayed at the scene and has been cooperating with investigators, police said.
Police haven't released the driver's name or announced any charges as of this writing.
Burlington City schools have activated their Crisis Care Team, according to a joint letter from Superintendent Dr. John Russell and District School Safety Specialist Dr. James Flynn.
"(Crossing guards) play a vital role in student safety; however, their effectiveness relies heavily on the cooperation of drivers in the area," the letter said. "We urge our community to exercise heightened caution when driving near schools and to remain alert for students crossing the street."
