Double Check & Ensure your Pet has Proper Identification before the New Year's Fireworks

Hello, Patch Pet Lovers!

One of the most common noise phobias pets suffer from are fireworks… and during New Year's celebration, we will certainly hear lots of them!  Please do not scold or punish your pet… they cannot control the fear and anxiety they are experiencing!!!

Please be aware Acepromazine was a very popular drug prescribed for pets during thunderstorms and holidays with fireworks… please ask your vet for an alternative medication, as studies show that Acepromazine actually ENHANCES sound!!!

A future post of mine will be information on how to help your fur child cope with noise phobias; namely, fireworks!  The reminder below is from The Preventive Vet, to be sure you furry baby has proper ID as well as a microchip.

IMPORTANT REMINDER REGARDING CHIPS I ALWAYS SHARE WITH PET PARENTS:  MAKE SURE THE INFORMATION ON FILE WITH THE MICROCHIP COMPANY IS UP TO DATE AND INCLUDES A RECENT PHOTO OF YOUR PET!!!

Very few people realize it, but New Years Eve is sadly a common time for cats and dogs to "bolt", escape, run off, and generally "go missing". And not only don't you want to spend your New Years Eve (and likely Day) searching the neighborhood and local shelters for your pets, you also don't want to think of them all alone and possibly injured or scared as the calendar clicks over into 2014.

Below are a few simple (yet very effective) tips you can use to make sure your pets will be starting off the New Year the right way... with you.

Tips to prevent your pets from running off or getting lost on New Years Eve (NYE):

  • Be aware of any scheduled NYE fireworks displays and keep your pets far away from them. But also keep in mind that there's likely to be plenty of unscheduled fireworks displays on NYE, and so keep the additional tips here in mind as well.
  • Set up and keep your pets in their "safe place" within your home. This could be a spare bedroom, in the bathroom, or anywhere else within the house that your pets feel comfortable and safe.
  • Make sure all your pets are inside before dark, especially on this night of fireworks, drunk drivers, and other factors that would otherwise increase their risk of injury.
  • If you're hosting a NYE party, make sure all your guests know to keep exterior doors closed and to not let the pets out.

And, for those times when your preventive efforts fail, don't forget about the importance of up-to-date, visible, and reliable identification on all of your pets. This ideally includes both a microchip and an external ID tag.

Be well and have a very happy, safe, and healthy New Year everybody. See you next year!.

Be aware. Be prepared. Be Preventive!
