Homeless Vet Who Helped Woman Buys New Home With Money She Raised
Kate McClure raised nearly $400,000 for Johnny Bobbitt Jr., and the homeless vet was able to use that money to buy a house.

A homeless man who helped a woman get home after she ran out of gas on I-95 has been rewarded with a new home. Johnny Bobbitt Jr. bought a new home on Monday, according to the GoFundMe campaign, which had raised nearly $400,000 as of Tuesday.
“The feeling is indescribable and it’s all thanks to the support and generosity that each and every one of you has shown,” he wrote to those who have contributed to the Paying it Forward campaign set up for him. “I’ll continue to thank you every single day for the rest of my life.”
Kate McClure, of Florence, and her boyfriend Mark D'Amico set up the campaign for Bobbitt after he spent his last $20 to get her gas after she broke down on I-95 heading into Philadelphia.

He didn’t say how much the home cost or where it is, but in true “Pay it Forward” fashion, he asked his supporters to contribute to a campaign for another homeless veteran. A grade school student in Philadelphia named Cole McCafferty has started the #VetsLivesMatter campaign to aid Jeff Johnson. In two days, it had nearly met its $10,000 goal.
“I’ve seen this man on the streets and although I wouldn’t call him a friend, I think he is the perfect candidate to continue this string of kindness,” Bobbitt said. “I’ve talked with Cole and his father and I really think that they can help change this man’s life just like mine has been changed.”

Bobbitt is a former Marine who was homeless for over a year. He is originally from North Carolina, and is a former paramedic who had a hard time recovering after a breakup in 2014. Once McClure and her D’Amico started the GoFundMe for Bobbitt, he was able to move into a hotel, where he stayed until he was able to buy his own home.
Johnson lost his leg while serving in the Navy, according to McCafferty’s post. McCafferty said he was “heartbroken” when he walked to school and saw a man who served his country living on the streets. He usually gives him whatever’s in his lunch box.
Johnson is married with children, and his 14-year-old son is in a wheelchair after suffering a stroke when he was born. They moved from South Carolina to Philadelphia to get treatment for his son, but their house was foreclosed shortly after they moved. His wife brought their children back to South Carolina to live with their mother, and McCafferty’s goal is to bring their family back together for the holidays.
Bobbitt had previously said he wants to “pay it forward” after he received such generous help from the public.
"This money was given to help me. Why not help other people in similar situations or people that are actively helping other people in different situations?" he told “Good Morning America.”
He’s asking his supporters to share Johnson’s story on Facebook and get the word out. He also said he’ll be sharing pictures of his new home in the next few days.
