Prospective clinical trial to evaluate two diets in the nutritional management of dogs with acute diarrhea

Feb 18, 2014

Gastrointestinal upset (such as vomiting or diarrhea) is one of the most common reasons owners will seek veterinary care. While there are many effective treatments available to treat diarrhea, nutrition is believed to be necessary to help restore normal bowl movements and gut flora (normal bacteria inhabiting the intestinal tract), especially in dogs with acute diarrhea. While many cases of acute diarrhea in dogs are mild and self-limiting, veterinarians and owners are interested in dietary therapy to help resolve clinical signs such as diarrhea or reduced appetite as quickly and safely as possible.

Fifty (50) dogs with acute (no longer than 14 days) diarrhea will be randomized to receive one of two commercially available diets associated with nutritional management. Each dog will be in the trial for 7 days being fed only the prescribed food. Owners will be given questionnaires to be completed daily throughout the course of the trial.
