Train Operator Killed, 23 Injured In NJ Transit Crash

BURLINGTON COUNTY, NJ — An NJ Transit operator was killed and more 20 passengers were hurt when a light rail train hit a log on the track Monday morning in northern Burlington County, officials confirmed to Patch.

A southbound River Line train hit the tree at 6:04 a.m. as it approached Roebling Station in Florence. The operator was killed, and 23 passengers sustained non-life-threatening injuries, said an NJ Transit spokesperson.

Officials have not disclosed the deceased operator's identity.

A bus picked up the 19 unhurt passengers.

The River Line remains shut down in both directions between Trenton and Florence stations as of 4:15 p.m. Monday. Substitute bus service is in effect.

NJ Transit police are investigating at the scene.

Route 130 South was closed in Bordentown Township because of the crash investigation. But the roadway has reopened as of 10:15 a.m. Monday.

Overhead footage from 6abc Action News shows a thick tree fragment under the front of the train.

It's at least the second River Line crash in the past few days. On Friday morning, a train on the route hit a truck in Burlington Township, injuring five people.

The River Line travels between Trenton and Camden.
