Rabies Confirmed In Burlington County Raccoon: Officials
People and animals are believed to have been exposed.
HAINESPORT, NJ — A rabid raccoon was found in the area of Marne Highway and the Rancocas Creek Bridge, the Burlington County Health Department said.
Officials believe humans and other stray animals may have come into contact with the animal and are working to identify those who may have been exposed.
Anyone who has been scratched or bitten by wildlife, stray cats, or stray dogs in the last month should contact the Health Department at (609) 265-5548.

Pets' rabies vaccines should be checked. Animals that spend time outdoors, were not under the owner's supervision, or have not received a shot in the last three months should get a booster.

The virus lives in the saliva of the animals and is spread by a bite or when the saliva enters an open wound, broken skin, or the lining of a mouth.
