Hello, Patch Pet Lovers!
Temperatures are sooooo cold out there… if you would like to help an outdoor kitty, the first thing would always be to help reunite it with its family, of course. I will be happy to assist you with a variety of resources.
If it clearly is a stray, and you are unable to give it a home, find it a home, or have been unsuccessful locating a rescue to help you, at the very least, please provide it with warmth and shelter in addition to food.
Depicted in the photo are step-by-step instructions how to make an outdoor shelter for a kitty… the key issues to remember are:
1. Be sure the shelter allows room for a kitty to stand up and turn around, but you DO NOT want a tall, vertical shelter, as the goal is to keep in their body heat!
2. Always use STRAW to help keep them warm, NOT hay, as hay absorbs water, and mold will develop. Another goal is to keep them dry! : )
3. Remember to place the empty planter into the hole to the shelter so there is a smooth entrance, avoiding any injuries from rough edges of plastic after being cut.
4. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!!! Place in a quiet,
discreetly-hidden area away from high volumes of traffic, dogs and pedestrians walking by, where no snowplows, shoveling, and/or salting will not be done. If possible, in a sunny spot, as you will find the kitties enjoying laying on top of the shelters, also!
5. Raise the shelter off the ground to avoid water or snow getting in… just be sure it's on something sturdy, such as a pallet.
6. Warm beds and blankets would certainly be luxury for your outdoor kitty, but I advise against using any unless you change them throughout the day if the kitties get them wet!
** If you use Styrofoam coolers, you want to turn them upside down to avoid the top blowing off.
Undoubtedly, you will be loved and appreciated, and very likely saving lives of the innocent, helpless furry babies out there, to no fault of their own.
