Planning a trip to the shore? Have a dog? Consider Wildwood!
Pet parents, doggie relatives, pet sitters, and dog walkers… have you heard the news?
Thursday, June 13th, wildwood365.net posted a press release (below) announcing a dog-friendly beach will be opening Saturday, June 14th! Not an after-hours beach, and not restricted to off-peak months… YES, you can enjoy the summer season at the beach with your dogs!!!
Please do so responsibly… with some helpful tips to remember:
- Any danger to a human also poses a threat to your furry love, with additional concerns to be aware of!
- Make sure your dog is wearing current and legible identification tags with a telephone number at which you may be reached while at the shore!
- If your beloved pet prefers not to socialize with other dogs or people, place a large yellow ribbon around its leash; this indicates your doggie needs space and everyone should respect that by not approaching!
- Keep your dog with you at all times!!! Want to take a dip to cool off, have someone stay with your dog.
- NOT ALL DOGS ARE ABLE TO SWIM!!! IT DOESN'T COME NATURAL TO SOME, AND YOU SHOULD NOT FORCE YOU FURRY LOVE INTO THE WATER.
- If your dog enjoys swimming, use a life jacket, regardless that they are on a leash.
- Bring fresh water and a bowl, and remember to keep it out of the sun! Ice cold water is not healthy to give when your dog's body temperature is elevated, but you certainly do not want the water getting hot.
- Doggie will be thirsty in the heat, and drinking ocean water can cause salt toxicity, so redirect them to the fresh water you've brought.
- Bring poopie bags and pick up the poop!
- If your dog has short hair and/or fair-colored skin, apply unscented, pet-safe sunscreen or have them wear a thin tee-shirt. Some doggies get sunburn on their noses and ears! Reapply sunscreen if doggie goes into the water.
- Use a large umbrella to provide a shaded area for your dog to rest, with a mat on which they may lay.
- Think of the hot sand burning your feet, stepping on broken shells, glass… ouch!!! Protect those sensitive paws with booties. (Same reason you want to provide a mat for their body.)
- If it's a windy day, keep doggie home; sand in the face is an injury waiting to happen!
- Remember to walk/run with your dog and bring busy toys… although we may enjoy relaxing at the beach, doggie may easily get bored!
- The best time to exercise and play with your dog is early in the morning and early evening when the sun is not as strong.
- Rinse your dog off after being in salt water and sand.
- Be prepared in the event of a cut or injury by bringing a first aid kit.
- Always watch for signs of heatstroke, and know what to do if your dog become overheated!
Hoping the suggestions are helpful... please add any recommendations you may have, in the comments.
Thanks, and have a safe and enjoyable summer with your pet whether you are at the beach, the park, or home. : )
And remember, if you're going on vacation without your pet, always hire a professional pet sitter!!!
